The EU's new research funding framework renamed, Horizon 2020, presents many opportunities
for academics and others working in businesses and NGOs to access funding. Horizon
2020 will be the largest research and innovation programme in the world, with a budget
of €70 billion, €20 billion more than the Framework 7 budget. Unlike the old FP7,
Horizon 2020 contains a number of different funding programmes and mechanisms that
are grouped into three funding pillars. The choice of pillar and underlying programme
depends on what you are looking for funding for in terms of the size of the planned
project, whether it is basic or applied. The three pillars are: Excellent Science,
Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges.

Many colleagues from the NGOs depend very much of bi-lateral or donor-agency funding
for their operations. Everyone know that across the globe many NGOs are doing great
jobs in the communities that they serve. Unfortunately, funding is becoming increasing
difficult to access and project funding goal post - criteria - continuing to move.
Two important criteria for assessing a project application are impact evaluation
and sustainability.
The 2014 KIE conference in Riga plans an expert-facilitated workshop on impact evaluation
and sustainability - how to demonstrate impact and sustainability of your project
to effect or, better still, to the delight of the project funders.
